Sri Lanka’s ambitious Electronic National Identity Card (e-NIC) project is gearing up for launch next month, as officials confirm they are waiting on a shipment of 300,000 polycarbonate cards from Thales. The Department of Registration of Persons has already received 700,000 cards back in March, but they’re looking for an additional 500,000 to complete the initiative. This was shared by M.S.P. Suriyapperuma, the project’s head, in a recent interview with Biometric Update.
The new e-NIC cards are set to incorporate advanced biometric features, including fingerprint, iris, and facial recognition. This aims to significantly bolster the security and efficiency of identity verification processes nationwide. Suriyapperuma indicated that several Sri Lankan banks are already utilizing this biometric repository for client verification, with some having successfully aligned their projects with the government’s e-NIC rollout ahead of the targeted implementation by June.
Additionally, there are plans to weave together the e-NIC with the Sri Lanka Unique Digital ID project. This integration will not only assign unique identification numbers but also merge various forms of identification, capturing essential data like birth certificates and tax identification numbers. Suriyapperuma emphasized that transitioning to digital formats is crucial for data collection and for informing data-driven policy initiatives, ultimately aiming for enhanced outcomes.
Awareness programs are being organized by the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka, with initiatives targeting both public and private sector institutions to ensure widespread understanding and preparation for the e-NIC project. These trainings and awareness campaigns are designed to smooth the transition to this new digital identification system for all Sri Lankans.
Sri Lanka is moving forward with its e-NIC initiative set to debut next month, fueled by a blend of biometric technology and strategic partnerships.
