A new EU-funded initiative, SafeTravellers, aims to enhance biometric-based traveler identification at European borders. Companies like Idemia, iProov, Vision-Box, and Ubitech are central to this project, which has a budget of 7.4 million euros (about $8.4 million). The goal? To thwart identity fraud and bolster border security using advanced biometric technology.
SafeTravellers will develop a digital identity app to help border control agencies verify EU citizens and non-EU travelers. Idemia’s role focuses on improving biometric authentication and document verification. This includes refining techniques to eliminate light reflection issues when scanning documents and enhancing the accuracy of Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
In Germany, Idemia is tackling the challenge of look-alike fraud by refining facial recognition systems to counter cosmetic alterations that individuals may use to escape detection. Moreover, the company intends to create a software platform that seamlessly integrates pre-registration, document checks, and biometric authentication for both travelers and border agents.
This smartphone app, designed for use in border control and eGates, is in prototype development, with plans for a pilot phase coming up. Worth noting is that the SafeTravellers project is not just Idemia’s endeavor. With over 20 partners from 14 different countries, ranging from universities to law enforcement, collaboration is a key component.
The initiative, funded by Horizon Europe, runs from January 2024 to late 2026 and focuses on incorporating diverse technologies, such as a mobile wallet for digital ID management. This notion of self-sovereign identity (SSI) empowers travelers to manage their data more efficiently, paving the way for smoother transit experiences.
Moreover, the project plans to employ a unified biometric framework that combines facial and fingerprint recognition, which promises improved accuracy and better threat detection. Efforts to address document fraud include morphing detection techniques and combating identity manipulation. For example, Ubitech is working on a robust identity management system and enhancing security measures to protect biometric devices.
