The UAE is set to eliminate physical ID cards through biometric identification technologies, primarily facial recognition. The initiative, spearheaded by the ICP, aims to enhance secure identification in sectors like banking and healthcare. It complements previous advancements, including the Emirates ID and the biometric Smart Travel scheme introduced last year.
The UAE has developed a biometric identification system that aims to eliminate the need for physical identity cards. This system utilizes technologies like facial recognition and is expected to be implemented within a year, according to Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention.
The initiative is led by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and is part of efforts to digitize public services. The UAE government is seeking strategic partnerships to integrate these new biometric systems into existing platforms for better efficiency.
These biometric IDs will be particularly beneficial in sectors requiring secure identification, such as government, banking, telecommunications, healthcare, hospitality, and insurance. Adnan Al Hammadi, a member of the Federal National Council, emphasized the urgent need for effective identity verification solutions in these critical areas.
Previously, the UAE has introduced facial recognition technology for identification. The updated Emirates ID was revealed in 2021, along with an electronic version available through the UAE Pass app. Since then, features allowing Emirates ID holders to utilize facial recognition have gradually been implemented within select services.
Additionally, a biometric Smart Travel scheme was launched last year at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport in collaboration with ICP and Idemia, enhancing the country’s biometric capabilities.
The UAE is progressing towards a future without physical ID cards by implementing biometric identification technologies. This shift is part of a broader initiative to digitize public services and improve secure identification across various vital sectors. By leveraging facial recognition and seeking partnerships, the UAE aims to enhance identity verification efficiency while continuing to advance its biometric capabilities.
