Privado ID and Privately Selected for European Blockchain Sandbox Initiative

Privado ID and Privately have been chosen for the European Blockchain Sandbox to develop an age verification tool using self-sovereign identity. Their solution focuses on enhancing user privacy and complies with GDPR while using zero-knowledge proofs. The European Blockchain Sandbox promotes innovation in Distributed Ledger Technologies through selected projects from 2023 to 2026.

Privado ID, an identity verification company, along with age estimation service provider Privately, has been selected for the third cohort of the European Blockchain Sandbox. Their focus will be on age verification employing self-sovereign identity (SSI). This innovative tool is designed to prevent the sharing of sensitive personal data, such as date of birth and national ID numbers, by utilizing zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) and verifiable credentials (VCs).

Privado ID intends to leverage the Sandbox to test the Billions framework, a new identity verification protocol launched in February. This initiative is designed to compete with established solutions like World ID and Civic, enabling users to demonstrate their humanity through proof-of-personhood (PoP). The European Blockchain Sandbox, established by the European Commission, aims to foster dialogue with regulators concerning innovative Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) applications. It supports 20 projects annually from 2023 to 2026, including those in the public sector related to the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI).

Among the selected projects is a sample application of EBSI for public entities, along with 19 additional use cases spanning various industries and regulatory frameworks. Privado ID and Privately first revealed their age assurance solution last November. This tool could be beneficial for online platforms managing age-restricted content, such as gaming, alcohol sales, and adult entertainment, with proof of age generated through an identity wallet leveraging on-device AI technology for age estimation, ensuring no personal data is transmitted off the device.

The solution prioritizes user privacy and minimizes data sharing, facilitating interoperability across borders for all EU users. It emphasizes compliance with GDPR principles, particularly concerning data minimization, user consent, and secure data management. Furthermore, it aligns with the European Digital Identity Framework and seeks guidance on the utilization of decentralized identifiers for cross-border services.

Privado ID and Privately’s selection for the European Blockchain Sandbox represents a significant advancement in the field of age verification and identity management. Their solution aims to uphold privacy laws while facilitating compliance with GDPR and enhancing user experience without compromising personal data. By utilizing cutting-edge technology such as zero-knowledge proofs, the initiative supports EU-wide access to age-restricted platforms, fosters regulatory engagement, and contributes to the overarching goals of the European Digital Identity Framework.
