SITA and NEC Collaborate to Enhance Digital Identity Interoperability in Travel

SITA and NEC Corporation have partnered to advance digital identity verification in travel via the Digital Travel Ecosystem. This framework eases the integration of systems, promoting global trust in digital identities. With a significant push for biometric solutions in the industry, this partnership aims to streamline passenger processing and enhance travel experiences.

SITA and NEC Corporation have formed a partnership to promote digital identity technology within the travel sector. NEC will integrate into SITA’s Digital Travel Ecosystem, an open framework that facilitates seamless real-time digital identity verification by linking various systems. This ecosystem, developed with Indicio, simplifies the process for airports, airlines, and governments by removing the need for direct integrations between identity issuers and verifiers.

The collaboration incorporates a privacy-by-design approach from Indicio, enabling passengers to securely share their digital credentials. Furthermore, Idemia is also supporting this initiative to enhance digital identity solutions. According to Goode Intelligence, by 2029, more than 1.27 billion travelers are expected to utilize digital identities from various sources, including airlines and other travel operators.

The Digital Travel Ecosystem aims to standardize global recognition and trust in travelers’ digital identities. This initiative will unite different identity management stakeholders to create a secure and interoperable framework, minimizing the direct integration requirements between issuers and verifiers.

With a significant portion of the travel industry interested in biometric identity management—28% of airlines and 43% of airports planning implementations within the next year—there is a growing demand for interoperable solutions. By decreasing the integration complexity, the Digital Travel Ecosystem promotes efficient operations for airlines, airports, and border control authorities, while enhancing passenger processing speeds.

Biometric technologies are pivotal in streamlining travel experiences, facilitating features such as selfie-based identity verification on smartphones, self-bag drop services, access to VIP lounges, and smoother boarding processes.
