IATA has introduced the Contactless Travel Directory to promote the adoption of biometric services in air travel. This directory aids airlines in identifying and implementing contactless solutions at airports, optimizing processes such as boarding and security. Key features include a single reference point, traveler eligibility data, and technical protocols, significantly enhancing the efficiency of passenger travel.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the Contactless Travel Directory, designed to facilitate the quick adoption of contactless travel solutions by airlines. This directory serves as a matchmaking service for airlines to discover contactless travel capabilities at specific airports, and collaborate with partner airlines. Contactless travel employs interoperable biometric solutions, enabling travelers to navigate the travel process sans paper documents such as passports and boarding passes, enhancing efficiency in various areas including bag drop, lounge access, security checks, and boarding.
Highlights of the Contactless Travel Directory are:
1. Single Reference Point: A centralized source for airlines to check biometric travel touchpoints available across their network.
2. Traveler Eligibility Information: Data regarding which travelers (by nationality, passport compatibility, and age) can utilize contactless services through biometric identification.
3. Technical Protocols: Guidelines necessary for airlines to connect with biometric services.
Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety and Security, stated, “The release of the Contactless Travel Directory will make it easier for airlines to expand biometric service opportunities for their customers. As travelers expect ever greater efficiency, biometric recognition technology is taking on a growing role in facilitating travel. This Directory, along with IATA’s One ID initiative, aims to accelerate that transition with critical data and global standards.”
Digital services provider Airware, alongside identity management companies IDEMIA and iPassport, will be the first to showcase the Directory’s capabilities. During this week’s Passenger Terminal Expo in Madrid, delegates can enroll for fictitious flights between the UK and Spain using the WorldJet Airline App, and experience passing through biometric touchpoints at booths operated by Airware and IDEMIA, simulating an airport environment.
IATA’s Contactless Travel Directory is a significant advancement in enhancing the efficiency of air travel through biometric solutions. By providing a central reference point and eligibility information, it facilitates greater collaboration among airlines to adopt these technologies, meeting the increasing demand for seamless travel experiences. As biometric recognition continues to evolve, the Directory aims to play a pivotal role in standardizing and expanding contactless travel services globally.
