Greece has unveiled the Personal Citizen Number (PCN), a universal ID for citizens, as part of its new digital ID system. Set to launch on June 3 via the MyInfo app, this initiative replaces older identification numbers and aims to facilitate transactions with public services. Additionally, a Kids Wallet is provided for children’s online activities, furthering Greece’s digital transformation strategy.
Greece has made a significant stride by launching its unified digital ID system, featuring the new Personal Citizen Number (PCN). This will serve as a universal ID for Greek citizens, superseding the older identification numbers distributed by various governmental agencies. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the PCN as the “key for unlocking any transaction with the public sector.”
The PCN will be available through the MyInfo app integrated within the Gov.gr digital wallet, set to go live on June 3. Citizens will generate part of their number via the app, but they’ll need Taxisnet credentials and a registered mobile number in the National Communication Registry to obtain their PCN. This streamlined process aims to simplify citizens’ interaction with government services.
Besides replacing older numbers like the tax identification number (AFM) and the AMKA social security number, the PCN itself is crafted to be permanent. The number comprises 12 characters, including three alphanumeric elements and the citizen’s Tax Identification Number. New ID cards will incorporate the PCN, while users of older cards can access their PCN digitally without needing a replacement.
Earlier this year, the Greek state kicked off implementation of personal identification numbers (PINs) for its physical national ID cards. The 12-digit identifiers are unique and span all state services, printed on cards and embedded in chips, yet not linked to biometric data. This aligns with the EU’s Digital Identity (EUDI) initiative.
An interesting addition to Greece’s digital offerings is the newly introduced digital wallet tailored for children, meant for accessing age-restricted online content. The Kids Wallet mirrors the Gov.gr Wallet used by adults and allows parents to manage their children’s access rights up until they’re 15 years old.
The introduction of the Personal Citizen Number and the Kids Wallet marks Greece’s commitment to enhancing digital services for its citizens. This is part of a larger digital transformation strategy aiming to streamline public services. As Greece joins international digital cooperation efforts, this unified ID system may position the country as a leader in the digital economy.
