Ghana’s National ID Applications Transition to Online Process, New Passports Rolled Out

Ghana’s National Identification Authority has transitioned first-time national ID applications online to enhance efficiency. This seven-step process replaces prior in-person requests. Additionally, a new chip-embedded passport system has been launched to upgrade passport security and services, slated to replace the old system by 2030.

Ghana’s National Identification Authority (NIA) has launched an online application process for citizens seeking first-time national ID cards. The move aims to enhance convenience and efficiency by requiring all requests to be submitted exclusively through the NIA’s website. Previously, these services were provided at NIA premium centers, but the shift aligns with their goal to streamline the application experience.

To apply, there’s a seven-step process starting with filling out an online form and uploading relevant information. Once the application is submitted, payment must be made, and applicants need to schedule either a virtual or in-person interview to review their information. Following that, a QR code will be issued for biometric data capture, which requires another appointment at a premium center. Finally, applicants wait for their physical Ghana Card to be issued.

In a related development, the NIA recently received a shipment of 700,000 blank ID cards to help address a significant backlog since 2023. This influx of cards is expected to alleviate delays faced by applicants seeking their national IDs.

On another front, Ghana has also rolled out a new chip-embedded passport system, described as a significant upgrade for the country’s passport services. At the launch event, Foreign Minister Hon. Samuel Ablakwa touted the new passport’s advanced security features, emphasizing that they provide a high degree of protection against forgery.

The new passport initiative is set to replace the existing biometric passport system by 2030. It boasts enhancements like superior chip technology, 24-hour service operations, courier delivery options, e-tracking for applications, reduced fees, and stringent security protocols that align with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standards.

This modernization effort includes collaboration with Ghanaian tech firm Biometric Travel Solutions Ltd (BTS) to ensure a streamlined production process for the new passports. The launch is part of a broader initiative to modernize Ghana’s immigration sector, which has already seen the introduction of a new biometric border management system and e-gates at key airports.

Ghana is making significant strides in improving national ID and passport services by moving application processes online and introducing chip-embedded passports. The new online system for the national ID card aims to simplify access to essential services, tackling previously existing backlogs. Meanwhile, advancements in passport technology also emphasize security and efficiency, reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernization within its immigration services.
