In a move that’s drawing attention, California’s Digital Identity Initiative has shown impressive growth in 2024. The program now handles over 4,000 verification queries each second, a significant increase in capacity. The accessibility of state services has improved, with integrations involving Medicare, CalFresh, and Sacramento Regional Transit, as noted by Anirban Sen, senior product manager at the California Department of Technology (CDT).
Sen emphasized the importance of the digital ID program, saying that often state departments are siloed and don’t exchange data efficiently. “A lot of times, state departments don’t share data with each other, and this is where the California digital ID program comes into play,” he stated. This program helps bridge the gap in data sharing between various government entities.
The framework employs identity providers, including the federal service Login.gov. Open standards and open-source code have been used to ensure flexibility, allowing for various identification providers like ID.me. Built under the principles of privacy by design, the initiative minimizes required information while still delivering essential services to the public, according to Sen’s presentation at the Forum on Emerging Technologies back in December.
Sen also highlighted the rapid development of the CMS integration, which went from concept to production in just four months. Additionally, the CDT has established guidelines for mobile credentials, which cover mobile driver’s licenses, business licenses, park passes, and other digital credentials. This is a game changer for Californians as the state leads in the acceptance of mDLs, further reinforcing the Digital ID Framework’s significance.
