Wero Expands European Payment Services with Launch in Belgium

Wero, a mobile payment app by the European Payments Initiative, is expanding into Belgium. The app supports QR code and P2P payments, aiming to create a unified European payment solution. Following its launch in Germany and France, Wero plans to introduce additional functionalities and enhance e-commerce payments. Despite losing some banking partners, the platform boasts 30 million users and aims for greater independence from U.S. payment providers.

Wero, a mobile payment platform aiming to unify payments across Europe, has announced an expansion to Belgium. This platform, developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), primarily enables QR code payments and Person-to-Person (P2P) transactions, allowing users to send money through their mobile contact lists. If achieved, Wero’s goal is to establish a comprehensive digital payment solution for citizens and businesses in Europe.

Launched in 2024, Wero already counts 30 million users and seeks to promote greater independence from U.S. payment services by integrating various national payment systems, such as Giropay and Paylib. Despite support from 16 European banks and payment providers, some, including those from Italy and Spain, have withdrawn their support, according to reports from Sifted.

The launch in Belgium follows successful rollouts in Germany and France last year, with plans for users to conduct cross-border payments with France and Germany, while expansion into the Netherlands and Luxembourg is anticipated soon. Wero’s global product lead at ING Belgium expressed confidence that this all-in-one payment solution would facilitate significant competitive advantages for businesses within Europe.

In the current year, Wero intends to introduce e-commerce and m-commerce payment features, already piloted in Germany. Future enhancements, planned for 2026-2027, include Point of Sale (PoS) payment options, subscription management, and additional value-added services, as elaborated by EPI’s CEO, Martina Weimert. The platform is also set to expand its payment functionality to include new features.

Wero continues its mission to create a unified payment solution across Europe with its expansion into Belgium, following earlier successes in Germany and France. The platform aims to offer robust digital payment options while fostering independence from U.S. services. Future plans include enhancements to support e-commerce and m-commerce payments, with comprehensive services slated for rollout by 2027, further positioning Wero as a leader in European digital payments.
