FaceTec Launches Free Biometric IDV App for UR Codes to Enhance Identity Verification

FaceTec has launched the free Scan+Match app to support its UR Codes, enabling secure biometric identity verification via standard smartphones. The app enhances user privacy by not transmitting personal data externally, while simultaneously improving accuracy through biometric templates. Looking towards 2025, FaceTec aims for widespread adoption, encouraging integration within governmental systems and various applications.

FaceTec has launched a free biometric identity verification app, Scan+Match, in support of its UR Codes system, designed to facilitate identity verification through digitally signed biometric barcodes. These UR Codes link a person’s face to an account or document number, ensuring data integrity through issuer signatures. As stated by Andrew Hughes, the app is built for broad accessibility, allowing users to validate identities using any standard smartphone camera without the need for pre-installed software.

The Scan+Match app primarily employs the rear camera for better operational efficiency, improving the experience for the operator. Through its user-friendly interface, the app scans UR Codes, validating and matching them against the rightful bearer’s biometric data, including extracting personal identifiers embedded in the UR Code. Hughes emphasizes that utilizing a biometric template instead of a low-quality image significantly boosts accuracy and reduces false reject rates during matches.

Available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, Scan+Match does not send biometric data or personal identifiable information off the user’s device, enhancing user privacy. Owen McShane, VP of Government Relations, highlighted the app’s ease of use and its role in combating identity theft by allowing biometric and digital linking of users to their identification documents.

FaceTec views UR Codes as a transitional technology from physical to digital ID documents, enabling verifications even in areas without internet access. UR Codes can be derived from digital wallets or printed, making them versatile for various environments, including remote locations. Discussions are underway with MOSIP to potentially integrate UR Codes into its digital ID platform for enhanced verification processes.

For the Match+Scan app to function optimally, quality biometrics are crucial; Hughes reports that the technology meets the performance needs of sensitive applications like border crossings or database enrollments. The app also supports offline scanning, though some advanced liveness detection features may not be available in certain situations.

In terms of deployment, an issuer must obtain the necessary encoding software, with FaceTec providing a secured database for public keys to prevent fraud. Free public sector licensing promotes accessibility while commercial entities can license for functionality. FaceTec aims for widespread adoption of UR Codes and has engaged states and law enforcement agencies to integrate this technology.

Looking ahead, FaceTec anticipates momentum for UR Codes, projecting considerable growth impact for its business by 2025. Hughes asserts, “It’s the right time and place for this tech,” and the company plans educational campaigns on UR Codes in various identity conferences, underscoring their significance in the evolving digital identity landscape.
