AOT has launched an Automated Biometric Identification System using Facial Recognition technology to improve passenger experience at six airports. Available for domestic travelers from November 1, 2024, and for international travelers from December 1, 2024, the system allows for streamlined check-in and boarding processes, eliminating the need for physical documents after initial enrollment.
The Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) has unveiled a state-of-the-art Automated Biometric Identification System utilizing Facial Recognition technology. Launched on November 1, 2024, this innovative system aims to enhance the passenger experience at six major AOT airports by streamlining the check-in and boarding processes. Initially available for domestic travelers, the system is set to extend its services to international passengers starting December 1, 2024. Passengers interested in using this biometric system can enroll during the check-in process through two methods: Counter Check-In and Self-Check-In Kiosks (CUSS). At Counter Check-In, airline staff will capture the traveler’s facial and travel document data using a specialized CUTE boarding pass reader, converting this information to a secure Token within the system. Alternatively, at the Self-Check-In Kiosks, passengers can check in by selecting their airline, enrolling by scanning their boarding pass barcode and inserting their ID or passport, and concluding the process with a facial scan. This data is also stored securely as a Token. Once enrolled, travelers consent to the use of their biometric data for that specific journey, thereby eliminating the need to present physical documents like passports or boarding passes at baggage drop, security, and boarding booths. The biometric technology integrates efficiently with AOT’s existing passenger processing systems, including CUTE, CUSS, CUBD, PVS, and SBG, thereby ensuring a smooth travel experience across Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai airports.
The implementation of biometric systems in airports represents a significant shift towards leveraging advanced technology to improve passenger throughput and security. Facial Recognition technology allows for quicker identity verification, reducing wait times and enhancing the overall travel experience. As airports worldwide increasingly face the dual challenge of growing passenger numbers and the need for tighter security, AOT’s introduction of this biometric system marks a strategic response aimed at balancing these demands while ensuring convenience for passengers.
The launch of the Automated Biometric Identification System by AOT is poised to revolutionize the travel experience for passengers at six major Thai airports. By utilizing facial recognition technology, travelers can expect a faster, more secure process that eliminates the need for physical documents during critical travel phases. With the system set to accommodate both domestic and international flyers, it highlights the growing trend towards digitization and innovation in the aviation sector.
