In late October 2024, senior members of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service (SBGS) participated in a specialized study visit to London, organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) focused on the integration of biometric technology in travel documentation and border management. This initiative aimed to bolster Ukraine’s capabilities in border security and illegal migration management through hands-on exposure and knowledge exchange. The delegation, comprised of five representatives—two women and three men—attended the Biometrics Institute’s Annual Congress, where discussions centered on best practices for border control and the management of illegal migration. Key activities included site visits to London Heathrow Airport and an Immigration Removal Centre, enabling direct insights into operational protocols and technologies used in the UK.
The OSCE has been actively involved in enhancing border security measures across its member states through projects that integrate advanced technologies, such as biometric systems. Biometrics involves the statistical analysis of biological data, which is applied in various contexts, including border control, to verify identities based on unique personal attributes like fingerprints or facial recognition.
